Opera and Ballet Theater of Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater was established in 1920 as the United State Theater. In 1924 the opera company separated from the theater and began to act as an independent Opera and Ballet Theater. The basis of opera in Azerbaijan was laid by the brilliant Uzeyir Hajibeyli who wrote the first opera in the East and in the Muslim world - "Leyli and Majnun". In 1911 the building of the theater, created by the famous civil engineer and architect N. Bayev, was built, and in the very center of Baku a magnificent building in a beautiful architectural style - Gothic - ascended. In 1928, the theater was named after M. Akhundov. This temple of art since 1959 bears the name of the Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. The theater, developed in the previous era, is one of the main centers of the cultural life of the republic today. Everything good in the opera and ballet art of Azerbaijan is concentrated here.
